In light of the release of President Bola Tinubu’s academic records by Chicago State University (CSU), which raised questions about his qualifications, BBC journalists have faced public anger for attempting to downplay the issue.
The BBC report claimed there was no evidence of forgery in Tinubu’s records. However, a counter-report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) contradicted this, revealing significant discrepancies.
FIJ compared Tinubu’s certificate, which he submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2023 presidential election, with certificates issued by CSU in the 1990s. They found that Tinubu’s certificate lacked certain features present in the CSU samples, like the expression ‘with honors.’
The BBC relied on three different Tinubu certificates for its analysis. FIJ concluded that Tinubu only obtained a replacement certificate from CSU in the 1990s.

Nigerians have criticized the BBC journalists for their report, accusing them of being influenced by bribes. The journalists, identified as Fauziyya Tukur and Olaroke Alo, locked their social media handles in response to the backlash.
