Tinubu Set to Appoint New EFCC Chairman: Controversy Surrounds Nomination

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is gearing up to name Olanipekun Olukoyede as the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This announcement comes just four months after the suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa, raising eyebrows and sparking debates.

Olukoyede, a lawyer by profession, previously held the position of EFCC secretary under former acting chairman Ibrahim Magu. Notably, he was suspended alongside Magu in 2020, and since then, he has not been recalled to office.

Before his role as secretary, Olukoyede served as Magu’s chief of staff, adding to the intrigue surrounding his nomination.

However, Olukoyede’s nomination is not without controversy. Critics argue that he lacks law enforcement and investigation experience and is closely associated with the controversial figure of Magu. Nevertheless, his supporters highlight his qualifications in compliance management, corporate intelligence, and fraud management, along with his certification as a fraud examine

Should the Senate confirm his nomination, Olukoyede would become the first Nigerian from the South to lead the EFCC. Nonetheless, concerns arise regarding whether he meets the statutory requirements for the role. The EFCC Act of 2005 stipulates that the chairman must be a current or retired member of a government security or law enforcement agency, not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, with a minimum of 15 years of experience
